Frederick John Monk was born on 16th October 1866. He was the second child and first son to William Monks and Mary Preston. He was baptised in St Peters Church, Liverpool on 10th March 1867. His older sister Alice Ann Monk was born in about 1863. He had a younger brother, William Thomas Monk, who was born in 1870. The 1871 census took place on 2nd April 1871. At the time Frederick was aged 4 and living in Dale Street, Liverpool with his parents and siblings. When Frederick was about 12, in 1878, his father, William Monks, died. The 1881 census took place on 3rd April 1881. Frederick was aged 14 and a 'Writer on Glass'. He was living at 19 School Lane with his mother, brother and several boarders. His mother remarried in 1884 to William Redfern. The 1891 census took place on 5th April 1891. He was still living with his mother and brother at 19 School Lane which was his mother's lodging house. His occupation was a glass writer. He married Annie Radcliffe Rivers on 15th June 1892 in St. Simon, Liverpool. Their first child, Mabel Marjorie Monk was born on 16th June 1893. Their second child and first son, John Monk was born on the 14th July 1895. He died 18 hours later on the 15th July 1895. Their second son, and third child William Monk was born on 12th March 1900. He died on the same day, aged 4 hours. The 1901 census took place 31st March 1901. Frederick was living at 71 Borough Road, Birkenhead with his wife and only surviving child, Mabel. Frederick was aged 34 and was a Sign Writer. Their youngest child and second daughter, Ethel Evelyn Monk was born on 10 December 1902. The 1911 census took place on 2nd April 1911. Frederick was still living at 71 Borough Road, Birkenhead. He was living with his wife and daughters. He was a Glass and Wood Sign Writer, aged 44. He was a Freemason. He was found on the membership rolls for the Wavertree Lodge in 1893-1898 and 1910-1921. He was found on the membership rolls of the Bohemian Lodge, Birkenhead in 1910 and of the Priory Lodge, Birkenhead in 1913-1921. Frederick John Monk continued to live at 71 Borough Road, and died there on 14 December 1935, aged 69. He was survived by his wife and two daughters. An obituary was published on 18th December 1935.
