Freda Belle was 18 when she married Bob Bailey (he was 26 years old). There is a separate document containing a diary of Freda. Freda Bailey Hazzard WILLIAMSBURG - Freda Bailey (née Smith) Hazzard left this earth on Nov. 11, 2005. Born to Walter A. and Etta L. (née Kurtz) Smith of Allegan and Barry counties, Mich., on Feb. 19, 1905, in Paw Paw, Mich., she married Robert Fitzsimmons Bailey on July 21, 1923, in Chicago, Ill. They raised their family in Kalamazoo, Mich., where Robert died in 1964. In 1977, Freda married Arthur Hobart Hazzard in Kalamazoo, Mich. Mr. Hazzard and Freda were active members of the National Iris Society, and were recognized throughout the world for their propagation of many prize iris. Mr. Hazzard died in 1982. Mrs. Hazzard graduated from Western University, Kalamazoo, and retired from the Kalamazoo Airport, where she was employed as a secretary. She was a member of the Stockbridge Methodist Church in Kalamazoo, Mich., and Williamsburg United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. She is survived by her beloved son, James W. Bailey, and son-in-law, the Rev. Richard G. Jansen, both of Williamsburg. Her daughter, Julia J. Jansen, preceded her death in 1999, and her daughter-in-law, Lucile (née Wilbourne) Bailey, preceded her in death in 1990. She is also survived by her sister, Gladys Stuifbergen of Bruce Crossing, Mich.; five granddaughters, Kathryn J. (Jansen) Todd of Livingston, Mont., and Carol Ann (Jansen) Greene of Sackets Harbor, N.Y., Lori J. (Bailey) Goldstein, Terrill L. (Bailey) Adams and Christina R. Bailey, all of Williamsburg, Va.; and five grandsons, Richard G. Jansen of Richmond, Va., Robert J. Jansen of Woodville, N.Y., Steven L. Bailey of Aliso Viejo, Los Angeles, Calif., William E. Jansen of Soest, Netherlands, and William M. Bailey of Williamsburg, Va.; 12 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. Three sisters and one brother, all of Michigan, preceded her in death. Our mother, grandmother and friend was deeply loved. We know she is at peace with the Lord and her family. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road.
