In 1910, Walter A, age 34, and Etta, age 24, lived with Freda, age 5, Erwiin, age 3, and Cecil, under one year, in Wavery Township, VanBuren County, Michigan. They state they had been married for 6 years.

In 1920, Walter & Etta and their six children resided in the City of Kalamazoo, at 715 S Pitcher St. Source Citation: Year: 1920;Census Place: Kalamazoo Ward 5, Kalamazoo, Michigan; Roll: T625_775; Page: 17B; Enumeration District: 173; Image: 369.

In 1930, Walter, age 54, lived with his daughter, Cecile Audrey, age 20, and her husband William A. Cook, age 28, at 1106 North Edwards Street, Kalamzoo, Michigan. Cecile and William had a son. William E., age 2, according to the US Census. Walter was not working at that time.

Walter Augustus Smith commited suicide in 1932. Apparently he had been diagnosed with cancer (throat). Etta and Walter were divorced about 1927.

Notes in Freda's files for directions to the homestead of Walter Augustus Smith: "Dad was born in Hope Township, Barry County. Location: 7 miles this side of Hastings (south of Hastings) on M43 Turn East at Grocery store. Log cabin on north side of road about 1 mile east of corner.
