    Duane Hellweg, 2274 SE 48th Avenue, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123-8023, 503 648-5072

It is possible that Fred Hellweg and Lena Reitmeier came from Germany on the same boat. There were pigs and other livestock on the boat as well as people.

Duane had lived on a farm and probably would have continued with farm life. However, World War II affected those plans. He served in the navy in Europe during the war.

In about 1946, he left the navy. In about 1947, a cousin was going out west and offered to let Duane come along. Duane liked Oregon and settled there. At first he worked building radar stations. Later he helped build schools. His specialty was inside finish work, and he enjoyed working with the architects.

LaVerle (L.G.) also served in the military, but he served during peacetime. He stayed in the service for six years. After his time in the service, he also came to Oregon. At first he worked for the post office, but then he followed his brother in doing construction.

By 1948 or 1949, their parents began to think they should move to Oregon to be closer to their sons. They packed their 1941 Pontiac full and came to Oregon. They settled in North Plains, Oregon and lived on a 21 acre farm. After his dad died, his mom kept the farm for a time, but then sold it off. After she died, the house was sold.

LaVerle had two sons, and Duane has three daughters.
