BIOGRAPHY:The Wyss Family Francis Josephy Wyss was born on May 11, 1826 to Nicholaus and ElizabethWyss. Anna Marie Zuber was born to Nicholaus and Mary Zuber. Both wereborn in Guensberg. In Canton Solothurn, Switzerland. There they grow
toboyhood ans girlhood, and were sent to school, and worked on the little farm with their parents. Later Francis Joseph learned the tailor trade and followed it until he left Switzerland. Francis Joseph Wyss and AnnaMarie Zuber were married on June 11, 1850 and lived in Guensberg for nearly two years. Late in 1851 they decided to leave Switzerland and seek a home in the New World. In March 1852 they, with their baby boy, left Guensberg accompanied by Francis Joseph's brother
Hironimus, AnnaMarie's brother Urs, and cousins Pantalion and THEIR (there)families, making a group of about fourteen, they traveled in stage coaches drawn by horses to Basel a days journey, stopping only to change horses. From Basel they traveled by rail to Manheim, Germany, and on to Cologne, where they remained one day. Here they visited the Cologne Cathedral, known as the most magnificent church in the world. At Cologne they boarded a riverboat going down the Rhine to Bremen, a sea
port. Here they boarded a sailboat. At times on the sea the storms were so severe that the passengers had to sit on the floor and hold to something fastened to the floor o walls to prevent them from being thrown down. One night they thought surely they would sink, but in the morning the sea was calm. Early in May fifty nine days after setting sail, the boat arrived in New York. In New York another boy was born to Francis Joseph and Anna Marie. And a few days later they started
west by rail. At Schenactidy the elder boy died, and was buried there. From Schenectady they went to Buffalo. Here they boarded a horsepower boat which took them to Toledo. From Toledo they came down the Wabash canal to Antwerp on a boat pulled by mules, walking on a TOW(toe) path beside the canal. At Antwerp they visited two brothers of Anna Marie who had come to America about ten years previous. From Antwerp they traveled to Fort Wayne, IN where Francis Joseph bought a home and farm from Christ Kleber. June 11, 1900 Francis Joseph and AnnaMarie celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary. In 1910 at their sixtieth anniversary, there were sixty three grand children living. Anna Marie died May 1, 1911 and Francis Joseph August 22 of the sameyear. There were more than 66 grandchildren and one great grand child.
