Fisherman Stein

Suddenly Passes Away As the Result of a Snake Bite – An Interesting Life. This morning about 10 o’clock San Antonio lost a former prominent citizen in the death of Mr. Franz von Stein, aged 65 years, who died rather suddenly at his residence, 531 South Presa street, from the effects of a moccasin snake bite, received while fishing along the river about six weeks ago. Deceased formerly owned the homestead property and a fine saloon at the corner of Alamo and Villita streets, and was very well to do about 20 years ago. He suffered reverses, until in later years he had managed to make only a precarious living by catching and selling fish and by snaring birds. He was a well-known figure among our citizens. Deceased leaves a wife and five small daughters in this city, the youngest a babe of about six months. He has two adult sons in Dallas, who have been telegraphed to???. Mrs. Stein has aided her husband in the battle for life by doing the work of a laundress and while her husband has been ill the past few days she has had to keep up the struggle and was in the yard hanging clothes on a line when he passed away. He had apparently recovered from the snake poison and had resumed his work, up to a few days ago, when swelling of the limb again set in and he became unconscious, and continued so until he died. The friends of the family have interested themselves and will see that the remains are decently interred and the family is assisted. In Germany Mr. Stein was a member of the landed gentry, who generally assume the prefix of von to their name.
