Frank Whiteley went to South Africa when he was 16. He entered the ivory and ostrich feather trade and was a confidant of Khama III.
He started a trading business in Mafeking in 1890. This business, Whitley, Walker & Co. with branches in Bulwavo and Palapye was a well-known expedition supplier in the 1890s. His partner __ Walker, was likely related to his wife, nee Sarah Emily Walker.
He was mayor of Mafeking during the Boer war siege of that town. He received the C.M.G. for his service to the crown during the siege.
After the war he returned to England and for a time lived in London. Later he split his time between Ilkley, Yorkshire and Llandudno, Wales. He died, likely in Ilkley, in 1933.
