1850 census (Frank's not with them; he'd be no more than 1 years old):

Black Rock, Erie County, NY (ancestry.com's index says it's image 1, but ) p. 179, 11 July 1850. E. S. Ely, ass't marshall.

Christian SCHEELER, 54, laborer, born Germany Mary, 54, born Germany Catherine, 18, born Germany Mary, 10, born Germany Margaret, 24, born Germany Christian, 8, born Germany Josephine, 16, born Germany

Based on research by Kathy Kopp, there is reason to believe that Frank Schueler may actually be the boy born Frank GRAUS who is living with his grandfather, Christian Schueler, in the following census years. Note that in the last one listed here, his name switches from GRAUS to SCHUELER:

New York State Census 1855 County - Erie | Ward #6 | Date - 27 June 1855 Frame house SHILLER, CHRISTIAN, age 61, male, white, occuption - laborer, value of real estate - $1000.00, birthplace - Hessia, can't read, owner of land, naturalized ANNA M., 61, female, Hessia, alien CATHERINE, 23, female, white, Hessia, alien EVA, 20, female, white, Hessia, alien FRANK, 18, male, white, Hessia, alien MARIA, 15 , female, white, Hessia, alien CHRISTINA, 14, , female, white, Hessia, alien GRAUS, FRANK, 6, son, male, white, Erie Co. 1865 New York State Census: Erie County, Elec Dist - 3, Ward - 6, pg 79, Lines 26 - 29 SCHULER, CHRISTIAN, 69, male, head, ger, married, married once, naturalized, owner of land, can't read ANNA M., 69, female, wife, Ger., married, 2 children, married once GERETRUDE, 31, female, relationship to head of house - child, ger., single FRANK, 16, male, child, Erie Co., single [1865-16 yrs=1849] Notice the last name..I wonder if he's using Schuler.

1870: Christian and Anna (from above) are in the 6th ward, but no children live with them. UPDATE: Kathy found him as Frank KRAUS, 21, carpenter's apprentice, living with Christina Schuler Goldsmit (and her husband Anthon], right next door to the senior Christian. (Christina is only 8 years older than Frank so cannot be his mother.)

1875 NY State Census: 6th ward, 4th district, p. 26, line 20 (two doors down from Christian Schueler, 80): Frank Schuler, 26, m, b. Erie, married, laborer, native Cathy, 26, wife, b. Erie Janny, 2, dau, b. Erie John, 7/12ths, son, b. Erie

A number of other Schuelers in the 1880 Census are also from H.D., including: -- Martin Schueler (b. ~1821; 7th ward, T9-0830, page 271C) with wife Mary (and several children (Philip, Francisca, Martin, Anna, Rosa) born in NY. -- John Schueler (b. ~1822; T9-0830 Page 126A), widower, with children ranging from 34 down to 3! (Carry, Joseph, Louisa, Charley, Willie, Anton, Mary, Lena) -- Jacob Schueler (b. ~1839; T9-0830 Page 270A), with wife Margareth, and son John (11; b. NY) -- Christian Schueler (b. ~1856; T9-0830 Page 126B), with wife Lena (20). - Another, older Martin Schueler, lives in East Hamburg.

1900 census, 14th ward, ED 17, Sheet 5b: 248 Strauss: Schueler, Frank, b. Jan or Jun 1849; age 50; age 27 at marriage [doesn't match with above; this would place his marriage at 1876, but in 1875, he's married with a 2-year-old daughter); -, Catharine, wife, b. August 1848; age 51; age 29 at marriage -, Jennie, daughter, b. Jan/Jun 1873; age 27; single -, Frank L., son, born Apr 1883, age 17; single -, Rosa, daughter, born June 1886, 13; single Roth, Charles, head, born June 1876; married for 3 years. [son-in-law of Frank & Cath.] -, Mary, wife, born Jun/Jan 1879; married 3 years [dau of Frank & Cath.] -, Helen, daughter, born Aug 1896, 3 -, Charles, son, born Oct 1897, 2

1905 NY State census (FHL# 825698): All were born in the U.S. and lived at 248 Strauss, Buffalo. 14th Ward, 1st E/D, Block E, page 55. Frank Schuler, head, age 56, machine hand; Kathrine, wife, age 55, housework; Jennie, daughter, age 30, fore lady; Rose, daughter, age 18, clerk; Frank, son, age 21, finisher.

1910 census, Ancestry image 12 in ED 99. Only Frank, age 60, Catherine, 60, Jenny 36 and single, and Frank L. 26 and single. Catherine had 10 children born to her, but only 5 still living!

Regarding finding the father of Frank GRAUS/SCHUELER, there's a Daniel GROUSE, 25, of France, in Cheektowaga, living with Elizabeth Shubrick (60) and probably her son, Patrick Shubrick (26). Not a likely candidate. (1850 census?)

Possible mothers for Frank (if he's the grandson of Christian) include:

  • Margaret, who would have been 23 in 1849-- but she's listed in the 1850 census at the home of her father Christian, without Frank (who would have been 1).
  • Katherine, who would have been 17 in 1849, and is also listed with her father's family in 1850 without Frank.
  • Gertrude/Josephine, would have been 15 in 1849... a bit young.

Additional clues: the patriarch, Christian, ends up at 56 Brown, which is right around the corner from where wife of Frank, Catherine Schmidt lives before they're married.

Frank's descendant, Paul Miller, identifies him as "Francis Schueler."
