First Du Toit in SA. Brother of Guillaume. The Huguenot brothers, Guillaume and Francois du Toit, arrived at the Cape of Good Hope on 23 June 1686, nearly two years before the main group of Huguenots. They soon settled in and played leading roles in their community. Both were successful farmers, heemraden (justices of the peace), served on the church council and played a large role in the free burgers struggle against the maladministration of Willem Adriaan van der Stel. Although French-speaking they gave their farms Dutch names. Guillaume had no male descendants but his daughter Helena, through her marriage to Jan Oberholzer, became the progenitress of the Oberholsters in South Africa. All the Du Toits in South Africa are descended from Francois and his wife Susanne Seugnet.
