From Slater / Carter History as prepared by Wm. Farrall, 1980: "Not much is known about the Slater side of the family. They were from Staffordshire and Francis (Frank) Slater was one of seven childen of Thomas and Hanna Slater. Francis was given piano lessons and showed some potential as an artist when a child. He served his apprenticeship in pottery painting in the "pottery" section of Staffordshire. When mechanical means were introduced to paint pottery, Frank was out of a job. He went from fine work to heavy dirty work by finding a job in the steel mills. He continued to keep up his piano playing and taught piano in his later years in Canada. Francis Slater married Mary Carter. Frank and Mary had four children, Annie, Tom, Nellie and Alice. Tom and Nellie came "out to Canada" ahead of the rest of the family, believed to be in 1912. In April 1913, Frank, Mary, Annie and Alice followed. They were accompanied by Arthur Farrall who helped them crate some of their furniture and china." Wm. Farrall's work includes a card studio photo of Thomas & Hanna Slater taken by Joseph Simpson, Sneyd Street, Tunstall, Staffordshire. Lived at 7 George St., Galt at time of Nellie's wedding in 1914. Frank's birth and death dates from notes of Bill Farrall.
