    The Silver Family
This family came to the Valley early in the 19th Century, and settled in Berkeley County. This was Francis Silver and family. He had one son Zephenia, who was born in Berkeley County. He married a daughter of Hiram Henshaw, of English origin. Mr. Silver purchased a fine property on Applepie Ridge and spent the remainder of his life in Frederick; died in 1875, at the age of 74. He had several sons who served in the Confederate Army, Capt. Frank Silver being one. His son Gray is now State senator in the West Va. Legislature.
The only one of the name in Frederick today is John M. Silver, son of Zepheniah. He has been twice married; first wife Miss Parkins; she left one son Byard. The second wife was a daughter of Dr. Daniel Janney, and a sister of Drs. J.E. And Mac Janney. She is the mother of several children. Mr. Silver lives at the Daniel Janney homestead (Welltown). John M. Silver has been mentioned elsewhere as one of the county supervisors and member of the House of Delegates from Frederick County.
The Silver family of the Valley came from Silver Spring, Penna. They might be considered as English-Scotch-Irish origin, as the name has been identified with these countries. The Henshaw family, with whom Zepheniah Silver intermarried, is one of great antiquity, found in england when two men of the name took shipping from that coast in the 17th Century, and landed in Massachusetts. From those two borthers, came the Henshaws of America, so far as known, - certainly those found in Penna., Maryland and Virginia.
This name must not be confounded with the splendid German family Hancher, so well represented by James, Thomas and others on Applepie Ridge.
Col. Frank Silver married Mary, a daughter of James W. Gray, Esq. Their children are Martha (named for her grandmother Martha Henshaw), familiarly known as Miss Georgie, the trained nurse. Her sister Odelia is the wife of J.W.S. Boyd the scout – one child John E. Jr.; another sister, Anna Beall, married Lester C. Hoffman; another Mary Llewellyn Silver. Their brother, Senator Gray Silver married Miss Kate Bishop recently.

    Francis Silver II (1775-1852)
Planter. realtor, surveyer, Free Mason, Federalist, Episcopalian, he was born 14 February 1775 at Spring homestead, Silver Spring Twp., Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He was the youngest son of Francis Silver, I, and Lucy Semple and the grandson of Capt. John Silver, colonist and pioneer of Silver Spring. His mother died when he was two years old and his father married Mary Hackett in 1778.
Francis Silver II grew to manhood in a loving, Christian family. His patriotism was shown when, in 1798, he enlisted in Lt John Alexander's Company, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Militia.
Francis Silver II came to Berkeley County with his father's family in 1798. He achieved early financial success and acquired land. On September 21, 1802 he married Anne Beall, daughter of Capt Zephaniah Beall and Anne (Cartrell) Beall, of Maryland. Anne Beall was also a descendant of Col. Henry Ridgely, a member of the provincial government of Maryland.
Francis Silver, II, established a home at Bunker Hill in a large stone house on the banks of Mill Creek that was formerly owned by Major James Stephenson. As a businessman he ranked with the leaders of the day. He was a loyal member of the Christ Episcopal Church of Bunker Hill. The births of his only son Zephaniah and his two daughters are listed in the records of the Christ Episcopal Church, ( Morgan'sChapel).
In 1832 he was commissioned a justice in Berkeley County. His wife died in 1845 and he died in 1852 on a large farm he owned at Whitehall. They are buried in Morgan's Chapel cemetery, Bunker Hill. He left over 1,800 acres and many slaves to his three children.
