The Putt family has had a significant role in the settlement and development of Jefferson, Auburn, Sugarcreek, and York Townships of Tuscarawas County, Ohio.

FRANCIS migrated to Tuscarawas County in 1812 with his parents, when he was 4 years old. The family settled in York Township (north of Stone Creek). There were only 3 families in the whole township when they arrived!

FRANCIS left his home in York Township (just north of Jefferson Township) at the age of 21 in 1829, and settled just south of the future town of Philipsburg (now Stone Creek, and still the only town in the entire township). He settled at the site of a cheese factory. In 1830 he married Margaret Pershing. His brother Daniel married Margaret's sister, Barbara. Francis had several different farms in the area.

FRANCIS had a farm in Section 23 (Auburn Township) which was about half way between Christian Pershing's farm in Section 11, and Daniel Lower's farm on Lot 33 in Jefferson Township. This compiler has often speculated as to how Elizabeth Pershing could have met John C. Karns. Perhaps it was through the Putts?
