During 1932, the year the Sydney Harbour Bridge was completed, Frank was unsuccessfully chasing work within the Department of Transport, before ending up working as a fitter and turner. Working as a fitter and turner, Frank worked on some large machinery in the BHP plant at Port Kembla and in the Department of Transport. He also made a lot of smaller items at work and in his garage for family and friends.

Frank and Toby married and along with their three daughters, they lived with Frank's parents at Kemp St Mortdale until 1957 when Frank had finished building their own home at 72 Walter St, Mortdale which was only a short walk away across what was a bush paddock and is now a church.

Frank and Toby had three daughters who survived beyond childbirth and they had one child who was stillborn in 1948. From three daughters they ended up with six grandsons and one granddaughter.
