Francis Morgan attained his majority in 1657, so he would have been born around 1636. His father Capt. Francis Morgan died young, and Edward Lockey took Francis in as his ward. After his majority, he transferred Lockey most of his property in York Co., Virginia in return for having supported Francis and his servants (I editorially note that the whole complex exchange seems remarkably amicable and fair minded on both sides). The records that arose out of this transaction, and a later suit trying to overturn it by Francis' heirs, are the chief sources for his life that we have. |
