- ↑ My father was married and had three children when the delegation came to Texas. About out three years after they settled in Cass Co. my Father's health got bad. He almost died of chills and fever, My Mother's people had also come to Texas from Alabama, the Witts, and had settled here in central Texas about 30 miles southwest of Waco so father and mother decided to change locality and join them. So in 1874 they moved to this section of Bell Co. Waco is in McLennan Co. McLennan and Bell join. For many years they were the only family of the Hills to come to this section of the state, though Uncle Seaborn move farther west along the northern border of the state soon after my father moved to Bell Co. So we grew up (seven of us were born in Bell Co.) not knowing the other Hill families (very well) They were 200 miles or more apart and there were few roads and slow means of transporation, so little visiting was sone between the families. I was about twelve years old whn on of Father's sisters and her family moved to Bell Co. Nancy Emaling, who had married Harris Daniel, and she had several children. They called her Scrop at home so she was Aunt Scrop to us. Grandmother (Born June 3, 1813) and Aunt Maranda (Aunt Maranda never married) came to Bell co. to visit us before Aunt Scrop moved there. In fact grandfather died Aug 22, 1886 and Grandma and the heirs sold the farm soon afterwaards and grandma and Aunt Maranda cam to Bell co. to live with my parents. I was born Sept 30 1888 and I think they came to live with us the next year, any way it was before I can remember. They went back to Cass Co. in a few years but lived with us at intervals unti 1900 when Grandma died while near her old home, though, in Cass Co. on June 16.
"We think our father was a wonderful man. Though he had little formal education, he was a leader in the country community in Bell County in building or help establish and organize schools, churches, etc., and took and active interest in politics. He was honest, energetic, ambitious for his family, and had the respect of all his relatives and other people in the community. He bought land as rich as any in Texas, and from products of it asissted all the children get an education. As one brother likes to relate, he didn't ask a child if he (or she) wanted a college education, he "sent" them to get it. He was killed by a team Aug 22, 1913. (same day of month as his father Ivy died)
