He began business life as a bookkeeper for a lumber firm, then entered the employ of the Erie Railroad Company as clerk. He worked his way up through successive promotions to be chief clerk in the Buffalo shops, and about 1890 was made division clerk and assistant superintendent. While Mr Hess was the practical man of business and a trusted official, he was a great lover of music and made more than a local reputation as a composer. He was an accomplished performer on the pipe organ and was organist for a church of the Evangelical Society and for thirty years organist of the Zion Reformed Church on the east side, and also choirmaster.
