This Indenture made the twentieth Day of March in the Year of our Lord seventeen hundred and seventy
one between Benjamin Thomas of Charles County Planter and Sylvester Coffer son and heir of Richard Coffer
deceased of the one part and Robert Lawson of Charles County Gentleman of the other part Witnesseth that
the said Benjamin Thomas for and in Consideration of the sum of five Shillings Current Money and the
aforesaid Sylvester Coffer for and in Consideration of the Sum of fifty Pounds Current Money to them respectively
in hand paid by the said Robert Lawson at or before the Sealing and Delivery of these present the receit
whereof they do hereby respectively acknowledge and thereof and therefrom do and each of them Doth release
acquit and discharge the said Robert Lawson his Heirs Executors Adm.s and Assigns and every of them by these
Presents Have and each of them Hath given granted bargained sold aliened released enfeoffed and Confirmed
And by these Presents Do and each of them Doth give grant bargain sell alien release enfeoff and Confirm
unto him the said Robert Lawson his Heirs and Assigns forever All that Tract or Parcel of Land situate
lying and being in Charles County aforesaid called Saint Michaels containing two hundred Acres of Land
more or less Together with all Houses Buildings Gardens Orchards Ways Waters Water Courses
Timber Timber Trees Woods Underwoods Profits Priviledges Easments Advantages and Appurtenances
whatsoever to the said Tract or Parcel of Land Belonging or in any wise appertaining And the Reversion
and Reversions Remainder and Remainders Rents Issues and Profits thereof and of every Part and Parcel
thereof And all the Estate Right Title Interest Use Trust Possession Property Claim and Demand
whatsoever of them the said Benjamin Thomas and Sylvester Coffer and each of them their and each of their Heirs
of in and to the said Tract or Parcel of Land and every Part thereof To have and to hold the said Tract or Parcel
of Land with its Rights Members and Appurtenances to him the said Robert Lawson his Heirs and
Assigns to the only proper Use and Behoof of him the said Robert Lawson his Heirs and Assigns forever and to or
for no other Use Intent or Purpose whatsoever nd the aforesaid Sylvester Coffer for himself his Heirs
Exors and Adm.rs doth hereby Covenant and grant to and with the aforesaid Robert Lawson his Heirs
and Assigns in Manner and Form following that is to say That he the said Sylvester Coffer and his Heirs
the Tract of Land aforesaid with its Rights Members and Appurtenances from and against the aforesaid
Sylvester Coffer and his Heirs and all Persons claiming by from or under him them or any of them
to the aforesaid Robert Lawson his Heirs and Assigns shall and will warrant and forever Defend And
further that he the said Sylvester Coffer and his Heirs and all Persons claiming or to claim by from or under
him them or any of them shall and will at any Time or Times hereafter on the reasonable Request Costs
and Charges in the Law of the aforesaid Robert Lawson his Heirs or Assigns make do suffer acknowledge and
execute all and every such further and other Acts Deeds and Assurances as shall or may be advised devised or
required for the more effectual assuring and conveying the said Tract or Parcel of Land and Premisses with

- John Hamilton, writer to the Regality of Kylesmuir, was John Hamilton, Laird of Kype in Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was born in Kype and married (1) Jacobina Young and (2) either Barbara Murdoch of Cumloden or a Semple. Neither he nor any of his children had nothing to do with Ireland. John Hamilton continued to write to three or four of his male children in the American Colonies from Mauchline (Regality of Kylesmuir) up until the day he died. His letters are online. He descends from Gavin Hamilton, then John Hamilton (who married Jean Cleland), Gavin Hamilton (who married Abigail Hamilton, daughter of John Hamilton, Tutor of Stonehouse.) This family on this site has been grafted onto someone else's tree. I descend from Francis Hamilton, who came with Alexander Hamilton from Scotland on the Bessy, a ship owned by Hamilton, to Maryland to work in the tobacco trade at Portobacco and Piscataway. John Hamilton was apparently married to John Semple, Jr.s sister and was a partner with him and James Lawson. They all went bankrupt and Hamilton lost the family estate of Kype forever. His children stayed in America and lived in Frederick Counties, VA and MD and my Francis lived in that part that later became Berkeley County, WV. - The Family of Francis HAMILTON and
Susan ______?
158 Francis HAMILTON b. 1743, Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland, d. c1802, Jefferson Co., VA, s/o John and Jacobina (YOUNG) HAMILTON (316/317), m. _____ (possibably a Susan or Margaret; in 1820 there is a Susan HAMILTON living alone in Jefferson Co.). Francis lived in the area of Shepherdstown, his land situated along the Potomac River. He lived at Keeptrist, in Berkeley Co., VA (now Jefferson Co., WV) where he settled in 1773, and was there on 19 May 1784. Keeptriste was formally the property of John Semple, which was the location of Keeptrist Furnace, a farm. The furnace was located on Elk run that empties into the Potomac River above Harpers Ferry. The ore bank was across the river in Maryland. It was here that his brother Alexander fled from Prince George's county in 1777 due the hostility he was receiving in MD for his views on the revolution. Francis left a will, but unfortunately it was recorded in one of the lost books of Berkeley Co., VA and does not appear in the re-recorded books. However, in a court suit involving North vs. the heirs of Francis HAMILTON, the heirs are named (they are also named in his brother Alexander's will #316.1). Francis Alexander HAMILTON, a grandson goes further in his will, naming the relationship of Francis' children and some of the grandchildren. A number of deeds in Frederick, then Berkeley, and Jefferson Co., VA track his activity in the area. On 31 May 1765, he witnessed a lease between Joseph McCormick Mason of PA, to John Semple, merchant from Maryland for 400 acres of land in Frederick Co., witnessed by George Merrett, Robert Scott, and Thomas Jones. He must have been in America at least by this date, 1765, because John Semple is also mentioned in some of dealings with his brother Alexander. On 4 Apr 1769 Thomas Hart, Henry Lloyd, Godwin Smith, and Francis were appointed to view ground from Semples Furnace to the Warm Springs (now Berkeley Springs, Morgan Co., WV) Road and report the convenience and inconvenience that may attend to opening a road to same. On 30 Apr 1771 John Keys sold to Francis for 35 pounds, one bay horse, one feather Bed and furniture, and his share in a crop of tobacco made by Keys on Col. Thomas Blackburn's Quarter in 1769, witnessed by Thomas James, Ronald Roy, and James HAMILTON. On 23 Mar 1783, David Meek in his will in Frederick Co., MD, left 10 pounds to Francis HAMILTON of Berkeley Co.; the executors of this will were William Good of Washington Co., Walter BAKER (probably Walter Sr.#156), and AlexanderHAMILTON. 1 Jun 1773, John Semple was indebted to Francis HAMLTON conveyed cows, furniture, and grain to said HAMILTON, witnessed by John Lindsay. As a slave owner, he was taxed in 1774 for slaves Peter, Roger, Sarah, Beck, Jeremiah, and Thomas. On 28 Jun 1777 he was listed at a sale of Abraham Buckle's estate. He witnessed the will of Barbara Merriotes (Merritt?) on 20 Dec 1778. On 13 Sep 1779, Michael Taylor of Washington Co., MD sold to Francis HAMILTON for 2 pounds, Lot 42 in Sharpsburg, Washington Co., witnessed by Joseph Chapline, Charles Criss; Magdalena Taylor released her dower. He was one of the executors to the will of Andrew Telleroy on 22 Nov 1780. In the years spanning 1782-1787 he paid tax on 1 pole, 5 slaves in Berkeley Co. On 19 Mar 1782 he was named in the audit of John Creighton's estate, and the audit of Robert T. Tabb's estate on 20 Aug 1782, and on the same day attended the sale of Barbara Merritz's (Merritt) estate. On 20 Jun 1786 Francis was taxed on 4 white males 16 and under 21, 7 blacks above 16, 12 blacks under 16, and 13 horses, mares, colts or mules in the district of Thomas Hart, Commissioner. His immediate neighbors on that day were David Evans, George Hagely, Peter Hagely, (Francis), Peter Houte, Rudolph Houte, Henry Jacob, John Moler, Elizabeth Rianer, and John Womandorf. In 1879 he bought from John Lindsay, household goods and other items. On 20 Apr 1789 he was named in the settlement of George AdamOLER'S (MOLER) estate. In 1790 he bought 123a in Berkeley Co., from Henry Lee of Stafford Co., VA. On 21 Jan 1793 Francis was named in the 2nd. settlement of George A. MOLER'S estate. He witnessed the will of Isaac Strider on 10 Jun 1793. and on 17 Dec 1796 he bought land from Peter Fleck in Berkeley Co., 120 acres previously owned by Charles Friend. There are 3 estate records for Francis in Jefferson Co., VA, Book 1 p7, 19, and 25. Unfortunately again, the pages are missing from the book. On 20 Apr 1809, the property was distributed to the heirs: John 47 acres, Jacobina 47 acres, Walter BAKER (#78 m. Magdalena) 39 1/2 acres, Elizabeth 25 1/2 acres, Francis 40 1/2 acres, John 43 1/2 acres, and Gavin 64 acres. No burial site has been found, and no marriage record for Francis. He may have been married in Scotland before he came to America. One of the articles in Maryland Historical Magazine states that Francis moved to Prince George's before 1799. The compiler believes that is probably the Francis HAMILTON who married Susan Blandford, considering the fact that Francis HAMILTON'S estate was settled in Berkeley Co., VA and there are no estate records for HAMILTON in the time period of his death in Maryland. On 1 Oct 1808, John Alexander bought from his sister Jacobina, for $435, 46 acres, part of the estate she inherited from her father, witnessed by John Wager, Walter BAKER (#78), and Joseph Moore. In 1810 John was living in Jefferson Co., VA, with 2 males under 10 (John, Francis L.), 1 male 10-16 (Thomas), 1 male 26-44 (John), 3 females under 10 (Eliza C., Eleanor, _______?), 1 female 26-44 (Eleanor). In 1820 Eleanor 'Nelly' is in Jefferson Co., with 3 males 10-16 (Thomas, George W., John), 1 male 16-18 (Francis L.), 1 male 16-26 (Francis L.), 2 females 0-10 (Eliza C., Eleanor), 1 female 45 and up (Eleanor). John Alexander received from his uncle in 1790 Alexander's Negroes "Grillion" and "Judy", 12 silver tea spoons, 1 pair of tea tongs, 1 case of bottles, and 1 clothes press in his possession, and one fifth part of the other third of the net proceeds from sale of his land. In several letters written to his father, John Alexander is referred to as 'Jacky' by his uncle Alexander of Prince George's county Evidently John 'Jacky' Alexander was living with the uncle on 19 May 1784 and 4 Jul 1784 at Piscattaway, and Alexander states to Francis that 'Jacky' is well. Williams, Elizabeth PhebeCLARY (nee DEANE) b. c1808, OH. Phebe was first m. to Isaac Clary on 13 May 1824 in Darke Co., and had two children Patience and Eliza Ann CLARY. Francis ran a tavern from his home in Greenville, at least from 1830 to 1837. He was granted a licenses for the tavern on 27 May 1830, 6 Nov 1832, 12 May 1834, and 3 May 1837. In Jul 1828 he was sued in Common Pleas Court by Hannah Werts who accused him of bastardy, a case he lost and was ordered to pay $100. In 1830 they were in Darke Co., OH, with 2 males 20-30 (_______?, _______), 1 male 30-40 (Francis L.), 1 male 50-60 (________?) 1 female 1-5 (________?), 1 female 5-10 (___________?), 1 female 15-20 (________?, 1 female 20-30 (Phebe). In Aug 1830 he was involved in a case involving the estate of Vachel CLARY, deceased, 1st. husband of his wife, in which he and his wife, and the two minor children of Vachel wanted the adminstrator of Vachel's estate to sell property to satisfy the inheritance. In May 1839 Josphua DEANE and the late Elizabeth P.HAMILTON by their council moved the court for a rule against Francis, guardian of the estate of the late Elizabeth HAMILTON for an accounting. On 7 Sep 1840, Mary DeCamp widow of Job DeCamp desceased, relinquished her right to administrate the estate in favor of John DeCamp and Francis HAMILTON. On 12 Apr 1848 Mary E. RYAN 13 (spelled RIAN in the document) chose Francis as her guardian, and also to serve as guardian of John RYAN 11, Emily A. RYAN 10, George W. 8, Francis L. RYAN 8, Eliza Jane RYAN 6, Daniel H. RYAN 4, William RYAN 2, and Elizabeth P. RYAN 1y, children of Rudolph RYAN, deceased. Rudoph m. Francis' sister Eleanor. 158.2Gavin (Gawin) HAMILTON, d. 1814, Prince George's Co., MD (between 5 Jan and 19 Jan) m. 20 Jul 1800, Prince George's Co., MD, Elizabeth DOUGLAS. They were the parents of Francis A. HAMILTON, author of the will which names the heirs of Francis HAMILTON( #158). Gavin received from his uncle in 1799, the remainder of the Negroes now in the possession of his brother John Alexander. On 3 Nov 1803 Gavin and wife, Elizabeth sold for $600 to Isaac Shagely, Division #6, the property Gavin inherited from his father. On 10 Aug 1808, Hannibal Claggetts in his will left G__cinHAMILTON $50 for a suit of clothers. (possibly Gavin) On 27 Mar 1809, Gavin HAMILTON was one of witnesses to the will of Edward Edelen. In his will, probated in 19 Jan 1814 in Prince George's Co., Gavin assigned William Kain Claggett, friend, executor of his estate. Francis Alexander Hamilton, son, to receive the remainder of the estate after all debts were paid. In a codicil he left a saddle and bridle to Walter B. Bowell. 158.3 Thomas HAMILTON d. c1834, Jefferson Co., VA. Thomas received from his uncle in 1799, the remainder of the Negroes now in the possession of his brother John Alexander. His estate was appraised on 12 Apr 1834. Named in the appraisal was Jose P. and William ADAMS. The final account was filed by the adminstrator Jose P. ADAMS, his brother-in-law in May 1836. 158.5-Jacobina HAMILTON, m. 2 Apr 1817, Frederick Co., MD, Walter BAKER (#78) her brother-in -law and husband of her sister Magdalena (#78/79 Direct Ancestors). There was no issue in this marriage. On 1 Oct 1808, John Alexander bought for $435, 46 acres, part of the estate Jacobina inherited from her father, witnessed by John Wager, Walter BAKER, and Joseph Moore. Jacobina received from her uncle in 1799, the remainder of the Negroes now in the possession of his brother John Alexander. (MDFRB57-58, MDPGB17 p430)
158.6-Elizabeth HAMILTON m. 1813, Jefferson Co., VA, Joseph 'Josie' P. Adams, and had at least one daughter and one son. Jose was involved in the estate of his brother-in-law FrancisHAMILTON'S estate in 1822 and 1853, and was the adminstrator of brother-in-law Thomas HAMILTON'S estate in May 1836. (MDFRB57)
