He is known to have two more children, Archibald (who was apparently the eldest surviving male upon Francis' death in 1787) and Elizabeth (who married James Farquharson of Inverey and Auchindryne). It is not known whether these were children of the two known marriages, or of an earlier marriage before 1746.

Francis spent nearly all his life in Campbeltown, in the far southwest of Scotland. At age 70, he unexpectedly inherited the substantial Finzean estate in Aberdeenshire when his cousin died without direct heirs. He moved to Finzean, but died after living there less than a year.
