Obituary.
Francis Sumner Austin was born October 16, 1824, in Adison county, Vermont; died at his home in this city March 17, 1900 at 11: 30 a.m. When quite young his parents moved to Bartholomew county, Ind., where he was reared to manhood. About the year 1848 he married Phoebe Mapes; came to Hancock county in 1852, spent a short time in Ft. Green township, then bought a farm in East Carthage upon which he located. He first bought one quarter section, a few years later another quarter, making him a very fine farm of 320 acres which he improved; substantial fencing, fine house and barn, in fact, every convenience for successful gain and stock-raising.
For many years Mr. Austin was the most extensive dealer in cattle and hogs in Eastern Hancock county. He was known everywhere as a fair, honest trader, always willing to pay the market value of anything offered him in his line. An indefatigable worker; mount his horse in blinding storms of winter, buy and gather in stock, plunge into snow drifts, wade the deep mud, brave any weather, to push forward his business. Cash down was his rule when buying; if otherwise, his word was as good as his note; no quibbling no whining, or complaining if things occasionally were against him. He was a firm and valued friend of the writer; his family physician for nearly forty years, uninterrupted; business transactions time and again, in stock and other matters; knew him long and well.
His home was thrown open to his friends; social gatherings frequent; no man exceeded him in his efforts to render all such occasions enjoyable; old and young, high and low received a hearty welcome. A kind husband, devoted father, accommodating neighbor, good citizen, has ceased from labor; released from pain and sorrow, has fallen asleep. Beyond the dark river, sees the Âshining shore, the eternal city -- the home eternal of the redeemed of the Lord -- in it will dwell a countless host in spotless white, to praise forever God and the Lamb. Dear old, true and tried friend, farewell.
WM. BOOZ, M. D.
The funeral of Mr. Austin took place from the residence Tuesday, March 20, at 2 p.m., and was conducted by Dr. William Booz in accord with a wish expressed many years ago by deceased. Rev. G. C. Shaffer and Rev. F. L. Tower assisted. The body was placed in the vault at Moss Ridge cemetery.
