James Herbert MCNAIR (1868-1955), artist colleague of the famous Glasgow architect Charles Rennie MacIntosh, known as J. Herbert or Herbert MCNAIR, married Frances MACDONALD (born about 1876 in Staffordshire, census) in 1899. J. Herbert married Frances Eliza MACDONALD 14jun1899 at the Scottish Episcopal Church, Dumbarton (dict. nat. biography), Herbert married Frances at Dumbarton 1899 (scotlandspeople website) or 14jun1900 (dic nat biog but this is wrong). Frances was born 24aug1873 at Ravenscliff Rd., Kidsgrove, Staffordshire (dict. nat. biog.), daughter of John MACDONALD (1825-1895), engineer and colliery manager, and Frances Grove HARDEMAN (1838-1912) (dict. nat. biog.). They had a child, Sylvan MCNAIR, born in 1900. Together with the sister of Frances, Margaret (wife of C. R. MacIntosh), the two couples were known as the “Glasgow Four”. Frances died in 1921 (C: R. MacIntosh website). In 1901 James H. McNair, artist instructor of App. Art, (b.1871. Scotland), wife Frances (b. 1876, Staffordshire) and son Sylvan (b. 1900) were at 65 Oxford St., Liverpool, with 2 servants (census).
