Florence was 14 years old when her family moved back to Caswell County from Marion, South Carolina. She boarded in Danville, Virginia, with her cousin, Nannie Bendall, and attended Rising Park High School. Later, she went to Blackstone College, Blackstone, Virginia, and was educated as a teacher. Married at 22, she and her husband lived in Semora, North Carolina, for a short while. She taught school and he operated a cotton gin business. Later, they built a house on the old Taylor Farm and lived there until she began operation of Talor Heights Rest Home in Yanceyville, North Carolina, at which time they sold their part of the old Taylor Farm to Julian Myers and moved to Yanceyville.
