After Moses and Martha had migrated to Kansas to help with the Shawnee mission, Flora was born. She had two older sisters that made the wagon trip in 1859. "In a conversation with a richly dressed lady on the train a few years ago, the subject of Indians was brought up. I had related much of the story of my people among the Indians. She listened with much interest, and as I was nearing my station, she layed her jewelled hand upon my arm and said, 'You are rich, You're rich! Now as for me, I can't think of a single thing that any of MY ancestors have ever done that was worthy.' Yes, dear relatives, we ARE RICH in the inheritance we have."

"Happy he who remembers his progenitors with pride; who relates with pleasure to the listener, the story of their greatness; of their deeds; and, silently rejoicing, sees himself linked to the end of this goodly chain."
