Fanny Hampshire was baptised on 14th June 1825 at Earnley on the Sussex coast, daughter of John and Jane Hampshire. Fanny appears in the 1841 census working as a servant for a farmer named Robert Wakeford and his family at Earnley. By 1851 Fanny had moved a few miles east to South Mundham in the parish of Pagham, where she was working as a house servant for a landowning and farming family called Peachey.
On 25th September 1852, aged 27, Fanny was married at Pagham to an agricultural labourer named James Bailey. They appear to have had at least seven children together. The 1861 census finds them living at Chalcraft Lane in South Bersted. James died in 1868, aged 39. At the time of his death they were living at Rose Green. Fanny was left looking after the children. She may even still have been pregnant when James died; he was buried on 11th January 1868 whilst their youngest daughter was not baptised until 2nd February 1868.
The 1871 census finds Fanny and the children living at Nyetimber in Pagham. She was working as a charwoman. Also living at Nyetimber in the 1871 census was a widower named Richard Sims, whose first wife had died in 1868. Fanny and Richard were married on 7th February 1872 at Pagham. The 1881 census finds Fanny and Richard living at 1 Nyewood Cottages, Nyewood Lane in the town of Bognor (which at that time was in the parish of South Bersted). Two of Fanny's children were living with them. They were still at Nyewood Lane in 1891, living in a four roomed house. Richard described himself as a cowman on this occasion.
Fanny died in 1897. They were living at North Bersted (a hamlet in the parish of South Bersted) at the time of her death, although she was buried at Pagham on 20th May 1897. She was 71 years old. Richard survived her by twelve years.

ch. 14 Jun 1825, Earnley, Sussex: Fanny daughter of John & Jane Hampshire
Needs to be confirmed at West Sussex Record Office. This baptism has been linked to the Fanny Hampshire who married James Bailey and Richard Sims on the basis that both her marriage certificates give her father's name as John Hampshire, whilst the censuses after her marriages consistently say she was born in Earnley.
