Billy and four other members of the Church of the Emissaries of Divine Light died as a result of a private plane crash on August 4, 1954. The Cessna 180, piloted by Bishop Lloyd A. Meeker, plunged into San Francisco Bay shortly after taking off from the Oakland, California airport, killing all on board. No bodies or aircraft wreckage were ever recovered, leading to a mystical implication by the church that they had "ascended."
