Ewen married Zoe Helen Draper on 20th January, 1944 at the Office of the Principal Registrar, Flinders Street, Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. The marriage certificate recorded him as being 52 years of age, divorced and a stockman residing in Katherine, Northern Territory. His place of birth is recorded as being Rosslyn, Scotland, and his father is noted as being George Gordon Macpherson. A postcard of the Cluny Castle Newtonmore was written to him on Christmas Eve 1939 from Sir Stewart Macpherson advising him that the family home was being sold. The postcard was in the possession of his wife, Zoe Macpherson, at the time of her death and is now in the possession of one of her grandchildren. The contents of the postcard read as follows:-
