When Provo UT hears a new Oratorio, "Man and God" on Palm Sunday, it will witness the climax of years of mental study by a Denison woman who now makes her home in Utah. She is Evelyn Lee, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Neal Vance Powers, 531 East Washington,, who composed and arrange the music to be presented under the auspices of the Provo City recreational Council, to THE 19TH-CENTURY CLUB and the WOMEN'S COUNCIL. Words for the songs, taken from his pictures, will be sung by the combined TREBLE CLEF and WOMEN'S COUNCILS choruses in the Provo Tabernacle. The Oratorio contains 15 Choral numbers and four Arias, all connected by a contralto recitative depicting the voice of Christ. Many musicians from Salt Lake City and Provo have heard the music and are enthusiastic in their praise, with plans going forward for presentations in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Lee was born in Denison and was graduated from Denison High School. She did concerts and radio work in Dallas and in Fort Worth and sang with St. Luke's Choir. She was a member of St. Matthews Choir of 100 voices in Dallas. She studied for three years under Marshall Brumbaugh and later won a contest in which he competed with 400 singers. She gained a scholarship at T. C. U. where she studied under Helen Foutz Cahoon, and also the coach for Mary Martin. After her marriage to Douglas Lee, Mrs. Lee move to Provo where she has been active in concert and club organizations. She is a member of The Treble Clef and THE WOMEN'S COUNCIL CHORUS and has been presented in concert by the Mendelssohn Chorus, a group of male voices that has been selected to represent Utah at the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Federated Music Clubs of America in Dallas next month. Lee is the only woman vocalist with the group. Of her composition, Mrs. Lee says, "I have taken all the recorded happenings in chronological order and in the exact words of the Bible, have set them to music in the form of an Oratorio. Every mood and emotion of the human heart is painted in the story beginning with the insincere 'Hosanna' of the first number. This depicts very throng which greeted Christ on the Sunday before Easter -- the very same throng which was to Cruicify Him on Good Friday. "The music carries through the institution of the Last Supper in the incident of Jesus praying in Gethsemane, thence to the wild confusion of the mob, goaded by the elders and Pharisees. I have humbly sought to capture something of the majestic character of such passages as " Father, forgive them. They know not what they do" in this music which has taken many months to compose. the despair of Jesus' Mother and His friends is quickly dispelled by the glory and triumph of the Resurrection Scene. " she belonged to the Episcopal Church. Her Ancestral File number is 7. Her Social Security number was 528 -- 38 -- 9041. She was ill with arthritis; osteoarthritis, mainly in her hands. The joints of her fingers were so swollen that they would sometimes get stuck between the piano keys. She found it difficult to grasp jars etc. In her mid to late 60's she used by drops for glaucoma. She was ill with heart disorder/stroke; she began to fear that she had heart problem on 11 -- 76 but was told by her doctor, Dr. Ackert, that she had an esophagus problem. She died, presumably from a massive heart attack, with no warning. She suffered from stomach ulcers on and off from middle age on.
