Evelyn studied Public Health Nursing at the University of Minnesota. After marrying, she and Jim were active in the Fire and Rescue unit in Custer, South Dakota and were the first ambulance team in Custer County. Evelyn continued her service to Custer County by holding the first Blood Bank, first immunization clinic, first TB testing and first classes in first aid for the general public in the West River area of South Dakota. She was an active member of the Yankton Senior Citizens as well as Our Lady Shrine by Lewis and Clark Lake. At 78, Evelyn still answered the call for volunteers to help at the Hospital during a bad snow storm and arrived by snowmobile to take the shift for floor duty. She belonged to the Sacred Heart Parish, Catholic Daughters, House of Mary Shrine, Rosary Group, Yankton Area Arts Association, Historical Society, Carmelites, Sacred Heart Alumni Association, VFW Auxilliary, Hospital Auxilliary, and was a Minister of Praise at Sacred Heart Church.
