Evelyn J. Downing, 86, of Creston formerly of Guthrie Center, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Des Moines, Iowa. She was born on July 23, 1922 to Charles F. and Mina O. (Ostrander) Coleman in Panora, IA. Evelyn grew up in Guthrie Center and graduated from Guthrie Center High School in 1940. She then took normal training and taught school for several years. On November 10, 1944, Evelyn married Dale E. Downing in New York City, New York. Evelyn lived all her life in Guthrie Center until she moved to Creston to make her home. Evelyn was an active member of the First Christian Church, Guthrie Center Hospital Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, Royal Neighbors of America, Quilting Guild in Creston, Monteith Community Club, Ladies Aid of Monteith, and she deliver meals on Wheels and also a member of the Christian Church in Creston. Evelyn is survived by her son, Paul Downing of Adel, daughter; Barbara Andreasen of Creston, 7 granddaughter, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, brother; John Coleman of Marshalltown, and a sister Dorothy Rutherford of Stuart. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, Son Richard Downing, sisters; Doris McCool and Mary Lou Coleman.
