Facts and Events
_DCAUSE: cardiac arrest Gurnelle was a retired Nurse from the Beckley Medical Center, VA. Hospital She received her nursing medical training at the Memorial Hospital, Huntington, wv. , with further studies at the Universtity Hosp, Pitts. At the time of her retirement she was a floor supervisor and at times acting in relief for the hospital Chief Nurse. She was forced to take early retirement due to deteriorated spinal disk. Charles Merritt, her medical doctor, called after her death and informed the family that she knew of her heart disease but she did not reveal this to anyone, nor did she attempt any medical cure for her problem. Gurnelle resided at home with her parents, drove her own car from Coal City to the VA hospital through out her working career and the worst of winters did not ever cause her to miss work. The last six years of her life became very stressful due to the responsibilities and nursing required in caring for her two aging parents. She approached Ted Farley's home, just across the road from her home to deliver some mail, turned about with some evidence of distress, walked back across the road to the backyard of her home, fell to the ground. The medics that found her here stated that she died instantly from a massive coronary heart failure. |
