GRAHAM - A young man and wife on their way to work were killed this morning on Highway 87 three miles south of Graham when their car went out of control and crashed head-on into a truck.

Highway Patrolman A W Parrish identified the victims as Samuel Ernest Coble, 28, and his wife, Mrs Eula Mae Coble, 26. They resided on Route 1, Graham. Lacy Benjamin Bradshaw, 40, of 308 West Pine Street in Graham, driver of the truck involved in the accident, was taken to Alamance County hospital for treatment. His condition has been described as satisfactory.

Highway patrolmen said that Mrs Coble was driving the car when the accident occurred. She was coming north on Highway 87 some 400 yards south of Alamance Creek when a car driven by Willie Ervin Mebane, Negro of Route 1, Graham, stopped in the traffic lane to pick up a passenger.

The Coble car skidded out of control when its brakes were applied and swerved into the opposite lane. It hit the Bradshaw truck head-on.

The accident occurred some 100 feet behind the spot where the Mebane car was stopped, and it was not involved in the accident.

So great was the impact that the motor of the Coble car was thrown completely clear of the car. Residents of the area who arrived soon after the accident said it appeared that the Coble couple was also thrown clear of the car.

The accident occurred on a straight downhill stretch of Highway 87 this morning at 6:48 o'clock. It had been drizzling rain, and the highway was slippery at the time.

The Coble couple had one daughter, Susan Ann Coble, 5. She was at home asleep when the accident occurred.

The Coble car was a total loss, and damage to the Bradshaw truck was estimated at $700.

Mr Coble was an employe of Webster Furniture Manufacturing Company of Graham, and Mrs Coble was employed at McEwen Hosiery Mill in Burlington.

A native of Alamance County, Mr Coble was the son of Ernest T Coble who survives, and the late Mrs Martha Ann Coble.

Surviving besides his daughter and father is one brother, Johnny Coble, of Route 2, Liberty.

A native of Alamance County, also, Mrs Coble was the daughter of Mr and Mrs J O Coble of route 1, Graham. Surviving besides her daughter and parents is one sister, Mrs Eunice Coble Tingen of route 2, Snow Camp.

A double funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Bethel Methodist Church. Burial will be in Mt Hermon Methodist Church Cemetery.

The bodies will remain at McClure Funeral Home in Graham until being taken to the church for the funeral.
