Her career during the Civil War was quite notorious, the incidents of her arrests and imprisonment being given wide international publicity. "She was pretty and vivacious and always dressed in the latest fashion. Though kind and charitable in disposition, she possessed a sharp tongue, was always open and unrestrained in her views, afraid of no one, and a rabid exponent of the Confederate cause." Her last address in Washington was 1707 H Street NW.
