Personal History

Eugene "Gene" Wright Murdock (1892-1973)

Per Joe Murdock's remembrances, his older brother, Gene, was an excellent cheerleader at Englewood High School in Chicago. In 1908 when Gene was 16, he was quite sad that the football team traveled "out west" and won, but the cheerleaders did not get to go. Gene was so good, that when he was missing from the cheerleader lineup, the crowd would call for him by name since he was so good.

Gene started Murdock Brothers Printing after college but, at age 22 when WWI started (1914-1918), he was drafted. Gene and Joe's father, Oscar, decided that Joe should drop out of high school at the age of 16 to keep the printing business alive while Gene was at war. This had the result that Joe never had the opportunity to go to college like his parents and brother did. In Joe's reflection of that time, he says he didn't mind leaving high school, but he has since wondered if it was really a good idea. But regardless, he said his mother, Mocco, could not fight her Oscar's will, per Joe's account.

Murdock Brothers Printing Company was started in the building at 205 E. Grand Ave. in Chicago that was inherited from Gene and Joe's grand "Uncle Bill" Kepler, their grandmother, Annie Kepler Murdock's brother, Joseph William Kepler (aka Uncle Bill). Uncle Bill bought the building during his marriage with Bessie Betterton Kepler as an ice warehouse in the age before refrigeration. The building was near Lake Michigan so ice was "harvested" in the winter for use later and insulated with sawdust. For many more details, see Joseph William Kepler (1842-1926) including his inherited wealth from the King-family that was lost.
