Ethel wanted the divorce. She was going through the change of life and became schizaphrenia paranoia as a result of that plus work pressures at Woolsworth. She believed Max was unfaithful and trying to harm her physically. The worst passed after the divorce (3 or 4 years later) and she watched over Max by taking care of his laundry, getting his groceries and taking him places. She was able to take care of herself and hold down a job and her mental problem was not noticeable unless she talked about her problems, some of which were not logical. The marriage was happy until this. She was diabetic in her 60's and had high blood pressure which probably caused her stroke in her 70's. Ethel had brown hair, deep blue eyes, 5'4" and laughed a lot. She cleaned houses part-time, worked behind the lunch counter at Woolsworth and worked part-time at the Edwardsville Country Club in the locker room. She had her first stroke at 72 yrs. and was partially paralyzed on her left side, but able to live on her own. Her second stroke was at 78 yrs. which put her in a wheelchair and in the nursing home. She liked to crochet and quilt and played in a ladies' kitchen band in which the ladies played instruments made out of home items such as tubs, washboards, spoons, brooms, etc. and they wore aprons and bonnets. Moved from Edwardsville, IL. nursing home to Moberly, Mo. nursing home when Helen moved to California in June 2002. References
