  24. She had attended the Timber Creek School. The diploma was issued from the Jackson County Seat in Black River Falls, Wisconsin.
  25. Esther was there at least by May 1927 and was there at least until July 1928 according to entries in her autograph book by co-worker friends, nurses and Sisters (the nuns). She, evidently, worked in the kitchen because people wrote in her autograph book expressing thanks for saving them treats, such as pie, ice cream, etc. One wrote, "To dear little Esther who was always ready to feed the hungry nurses." One of her tasks may have been washing dishes because Inez Thorsson wrote, "I'm your other dishwasher so I'll write opposite Mary's page," indicating that she and Mary were dishwashers. Esther's sister, Hazel, also worked at St. Mary's at the time as did other girls from "back home." (This employment probably ended with onset of The Depression).

  28. Opal wrote on 3 Nov 1935, "Dear Esther, Haven't known you long, but hope we can continue the friendship we've worked up in our house cleaning days. I'll always remember you as the person whom made my first week as Mrs. Everson nice in my new home."
  29. According to Google Maps, the residence is no longer there. The address appears to be a parking lot next to a paint and body shop for cars. The area has a look of a business district rather than a residential area.
  30. Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Daugherty and Red Daugherty autographs, Feb 1939; Nell Daugherty, who later married Jim O'Neil, their autographs Nov 1939.
  31. According to Google Maps, the red brick church is still in the same location and looks exactly the same as in the drawing found in the 1939 church bulletin announcing the new members. University Avenue, where Esther lived, and the church appear to be about eight blocks apart with I-94 currently running parallel and midway between University Ave. and Marshall Ave. The location of Esther's residence on University Ave. was about one long block west of Chatsworth St., which intersected with University Ave. and ran directly to the church at the intersection with Marshall Ave.
  32. This was before Esther and Jack were married, and a letter from Jack, dated 26 Aug 1941, was written to her at the above address. Among other things, he wrote, "Say, what kind of doctor are you working for anyway? You having a stomach ache and ask me for a cure. He must be a horse doctor." He also wrote about their attire for their upcoming wedding, "That must be a swell dress you bought with a $10.95 price on it." "I was looking for a suit again yesterday but they didn't have what I wanted. But there was a peddler around here Thursday. He had the kind of goods I wanted for $24.95 but he would have to take my measure and send it in to the company and that would take six days or more. If it doesn't rain, I'll finish the hay tomorrow. So Tuesday I will go down to Monkey dovi [Mondovi] to do a little collecting and take in the last day of the fair, and I'll look around for a suit while I'm there. Will I have to get a blue hat too, or a black? Tho I prefer a gray one."
  33. (She also maintained her home near Foster during this time).
