[edit] ObituaryNewspaper: Wilmington Star-News; Publication Date: 20 Feb 2005; Publication Place: Wilmington , NC , US Mr. Errol Riebold Courrege, age 97, of Wilmington, NC, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005, at his residence. He was born in New Iberia, LA on April 2, 1907, the son of the late Joseph Courrege and Louisiana Sophie Kramer Courrege. His mother was the first child born in Louisiana to the Kramer family. He was also predeceased by his wife, Amelia Kelty Carstens Courrege and three brothers, Keith Edward Courrege, Gilbert Courrege and William Donovan Courrege. Errol married Amelia on June 10th, 1935. They had been sweethearts since the sixth grade. Except for a brief stay in Houston, TX, they resided in their home town of New Iberia, LA along the bayou. Amelia was an English high school teacher. He served in the Coast Guard in World War II and reported sightings of German submarines in the Gulf of Mexico. He was in the oil field supply business for many years. Later, he worked for Texaco in electronics repair on the oil rigs in the gulf. His stories of being caught by hurricanes, long before early warnings, were amazing. He attended the University of Louisiana in Lafayette formerly Southwestern Louisiana Institute, but lacked one class graduating with an engineering degree. "I do not need that class to do what I want to do," he said, to the greatest irritation of his wife. He was an avid photographer. Most notable was his photography and publication of the "Garden of Seasons," particularly "Old Man Winter" at "The Shadows" plantation formerly owned by William Weeks Hall in New Iberia. Survivors include his daughters Mary Lou Courrege Ohashi of Wilmington, NC, son, Joseph Errol Courrege of Colorado Springs, CO, his sister, Ruth Courrege Ellzey of New Iberia, LA and three grandchildren, Rebecca Amelia Courrege, Tammy Stroup and Emmyline Haskins. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment will be in New Iberia, LA beside his wife. Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. References
