Ernest conducted the first grocery store in Richmond, a second at 59 Greville St, Prahran in 1891. He sold both businesses amd moved his family to Lilydale, where they lived well, with the help of a live in maid. A very short time after moving to Perth, Ernest became gravely ill, and died of typhoid, leaving Ellen almost destiture ro care for the 8 children from 4 to 18 years of age. Ellen was a very proud woman, who did not allow people to know of their plight and made jams, etc, to raise enough money to feed her family
