Born in Newcastle Natal on the farm in the Normandene District 17 April 1905. Died in Durban Natal on 11 January 1987.

After his mother Alice Margaret died in child birth in 1910 Ernest went to live with the Colliers on their adjoining farm in Newcastle. Ernest was moved back to town after his father Alfred Henry remarried to widow Sarah Ellen Cameron (nee Richards) in 1913.

Ernest completed Primary School in 1916 and was sent to work at the local Grocery Shop in Newcastle, ( Aged 11), In 1920 he decided to learn butchering and worked at George Humphries Butchery in Newcastle.

During the depression years and up to 1941 Ernest worked at various places: Warmsley’s Garage as a motor mechanic Newcastle. Andrew Hamiltons Butchery Newcastle ( Aunty Nellie’s father). Vryheid Butchery (stayed with Uncle Alf Richards the Magistrate). Inyati Colliery Butchery. East Griqualand Butchery in Pietermaritzburg with Jim Redman. Lahee Butchery in Pinetown. Jo’berg Butchery. Germiston Butchery.

In 1942 Ernest went to work as the Compound Manager/ Yardsman at the ERPM (East Rand Premiere Mines) in Boksburg.

Ernest met and married Pauline Elizabeth Irwin on 3 February 1944 at St Micheal & All Angels, Boksburg, ERPM.

They begat Phillippa, David, Cecelia & Andrew

Ernest decided to join Aubrey his younger brother in Durban in January 1948 as a traveling Salesman for Wilfred Ireland his oldest brother’s Clothing Company and moved to Durban.

Ernest decided to join Clyde Butchery, Durban in 1954 as Manager/ Blockman. Ernest bought Thompsons Butchery, Durban in 1959.

On 21 March 1973 Ernest’s younger son Andrew was killed in a motor vehicle accident.

Ernest bought Stella Meat Supply, Durban in 1974. Ernest finally retired in 1979 (aged 74) and sold the business.
