Facts and Events
In 1870, Erik Jansson got a license to work at a railroad construction some distance away from Linde parish He returned the next year. The family moved from cottage to cottage in Linde: Snuggen 1854-1860 Tomtehylle 1861-1864 Lindeshyttan 1866-1873 Fornaboda 1873-1877 The family scattered after Erik’s death. Maria Lovisa is noted as porr and got some small help from the parish, and the children had to go out as farm hands. The vocation “cotter” refers to non-landholding farmers. Each had a small field, a small cottage, and a small barn. The cotters had to work for the landowners for rent, and the small field was for the wives and children to farm. Many of then moved from cottage to cottage looking for better conditions. The cotters were very poor. Erik Jansson is a good example of such a cotter. His father was a farmer, and his older brother Per probably took over the farm, so Erik had to become a cotter. |
