He passed two years at Princeton, then studied medicine with his uncle, Dr. Thomas Williams in Deerfield, Massachusetts and in 1765 became a surgeon at Stockbridge. He was a skilful surgeon, and the principal operator within a circle of thirty miles radius. During the Revolution, he served as Major of the 7th Massachusetts Regiment and was with it on Lake Champlain from December 1776 until April 1777, and subsequently until Burgoyne's surrender.
