This is clearly careless proofreading. The marriage and children, all occurring before Ephraim's birth, actually belong to Nancy's first husband Ephraim Tuel, after whom Ephraim Tuel Merrifield was named. Ephraim, like his brothers, died prior to marriage, as is confirmed by the fact that his father's will of 1844 only names his wife Nancy and daughter Hannah.
