Ephraim was enlisted as a Blacksmith in Company A. Bradford's Battalion. 13th. Tennessee Cavalry; United States Army on 19 Nov 1863. He was captured on 12 April 1864 at Fort Pillow, Tennessee and was held as a prisoner of war at Andersonville Prison until the time of his death. The cause of his death is listed as SCORBUTUS. This is better known as Scurvy or a deficiency of Vitamin C. There are records where his widow Comfort applied to the United States Government for a Widow’s Pension. According to the 1850 Census Ephraim and Comfort lived in Decatur County, Tennessee. In the 1880 Census Comfort lived in Decatur County, Tennessee. with her son John William Churchwell and his family, including my 4 year old Great Grandmother Alice. Image Gallery
