Facts and Events
From research of Dr. Anthony Troha: From a book series on the Dutch Congregation of Oyster Bay, Long Island, New York, we find the following genealogical records: “A Documentary History of the Dutch Congregation of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Island of Nassau (Now Long Island), Volumes 1 – 5”, by Henry A. Stoutenburgh, The Knickerbocker Press, New York (1902). Page 373: “EPENETUS NOSTRAND, son of David and Martha Titus, b. Nov. 2, 1800; d. May 24, 1880; m., Dec. 26, 1822, Eliza A. Burt, dau. Of Joseph and Ann Smith, b. July 18, 1803; d. Mch. 29, 1888. He kept a store at Jericho and Glen Cove; owned a farm at Cedar Swamp and at Sands Point. Is bd. [buried] on the old farm at Jericho. Issue: Margaret Ann, m. Townsend Jackson. Benjamin B., m. Mary C. Sands.” Note: The title of each volume (or pamphlet) of this series that appears on the cover is the rather confusing “A Documentary History of het (the) Nederduytsche Gemeente (Dutch Congregation) of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Island of Nassau (Now Long Island)”. Evidently, the author or printer thought that the Dutch words for “the Dutch Congregation” should be interlaced with their English equivalents in the title. Some of the pamphlets of this series can be found on Archive.org, but the entire five-volume set is available through Google Books as a single file. 1870 Census North Hempstead, Queens Co., New York Nostrand, Epenetus 69 M W Farmer NY Nostrand Eliza H. 66 F W Keeping House NY Jackson, Benjamin 26 M W Farmer NY Pollock, Mary 30 F W Domestic Ireland Blake, William H. 9 M B NY (Benjamin Jackson is Epenetus Nostrand's grandson, son of his dau Margaret.)
