Facts and Events
Enos Redknap was born abt 1795 in Twickenham. Other internet researchers have his parents listed as Enos Redknap and Ann Portsmouth, and say that Enos was baptised in Twickenham on 8 May 1795. I haven't yet found source records for this information and would appreciate any help with this. Perhaps the waterman "Affidavit Birth Proof Book" at the Guildhall library can supply this proof. Enos worked on the Thames as a waterman, an occupation that required a license from the Company of Watermen and Lightermen. After 1759 when the apprentice system began, watermen apprentices had to prove they were between the ages of 14 and 20. The death record that we believe is the correct Enos Redknap agrees that he was born about 1795, so he would be 14 in 1809. There is an apprenticeship record for an Enos Redknap from Twickenham, bound 10 Aug 1809 to George Redknap and released 12 Mar 1818. This is very likely to be the correct Enos. So far I've found one George Redknap that fits the bill: Enos Sr.'s first cousin George Redknap. In 1820 Enos was living in Shoreditch and on 26 Jul 1820 at St. Leonard's Church, Shoreditch he married Hannah Pressman (nee Argent), a widow with four children. Witnesses were Hannah's previous father-in-law John Pressman and Clifford Elisha (sp?). On 3 Apr 1821 their daughter Arabella Amelia Redknap was born, and she was baptised at All Saints Church, Poplar on 2 May 1821. The baptism record gives his occupation as lighterman. Hannah was 36 when Arabella was born, and perhaps this is why we haven't found that they had other children. In any case, Enos died and was buried 8 Aug 1828 at All Saints Church, Poplar aged just 33 years.
