- ↑ From the Biography of Mary Ann Bates Ellsworth:
"In the fall of 1879 an epidemic of diphtheria struck West Weber and in one week, two of her children were taken. There were no doctors at this time, so they had to do the best they could, as all of the family were stricken, but one boy was away from home. The death of the little girl was very sad. She knew she was going and begged of her mother to wash her and comb her hair and dress her up pretty and let her go. It seemed as though she could not go until she had the consent of her Mother. Immediately after this she turned over and died."
