Joel and Emma Johnson resided at 5815 Ridge Ave, Chicago, Ill.

Emma's first trip to the U.S. started November 2, 1901 from Liverpool on the ship "Celtic" at the age of 17 yrs. She arrived on Ellis Island on November 17, 1901 and had listed her brother, John Carlson. 3613 5th Avenue, Chicago as her destination. She travelled under her real name Emma Johansson. At this time her father was dead and her mother was apparently living at the poor-house. She came back in 1906 and could not live with her mother so she lived in Ostra Karup with her uncle August Svensson. August had a small farm in a place named Hallahus no.2, Hunnesstorp.

For undetermined reasons, Emma traveled in 1907 to the U.S under the surname of Carlsson rather than Johansson. Emma and Joel together arrived at Ellis Island New York on June 9, 1907 on the vessel S.S. Baltic (third Cabin/class) which departed from Liverpool, England. Ellis Island records indicated about same as above for arrival date (one day off from INS papers). The handwritten passenger manifest indicated that she had been to the U.S. before in 1903 and 1906. It indicated that she was a maid and was going to stay with her brother, John Carlson who lived at 5759 May Street., Chicago,Il. and that she was from Hjarnarp. Also she was 5' 7.5" tall and had brown hair.

She resided in Chicago from June 1907 to 1910; in Waterloo, Iowa from 1910 to 1913; and then back to Chicago in 1913.

She was Naturalized on December 10, 1942. Certificate # 5526766, Petition 271822. Certificate indicate she was 5 feet 7 inches tall with blue eyes, 170 lbs.

DC indicates she died of Carcinoma of Breast with Metastases to Liver

This is in response to your research request concerning Emma Carlson Johnson and family. Th following sources have been searched: records of St. Mark's Lutheran church in Cedar Rapids IA; Immanuel Lutheran in Chicago IL; Hallands liin emigrant index 1861-1900; emigrant lists from Ostra Karup parish 1901-1907; Swedish-American Newspapers in Chicago (Missions- Viinnen, Svenska Amerikanaren-Tribunen, & Covenant Weekly); Swedish Passenger index database Emihamn 1869-1930 In Emihamn, I found Joel & Emma leaving the port of Goteborg on the same day, 28 May 1907 with destinations of Chicago (copies enclosed). Joel's last place of residence was Rebbelberga parish in Kristianstads Ian and he was 27 years old. Emma was 23 years old and was a Jungfru (unmarried). This shows her last place of residence as Amerika, which means that she was a resident of the U.S. already and was leaving Sweden again after a visit there. From this we cannot tell where she was originally from in Sweden. You can use the guide mentioned above request the name of the ship that they would have taken from Sweden to England. I was unable to locate her leaving in an earlier year .There are too many Emma Carlsons and there were none in the correct age group who were leaving Ostra Karup parish in Hallands Ian. You noted that Emma & Joel were married in Waterloo by an A.E. Gustafson, so I found Pastor Gustafson in The Augustana Ministerium 1850-1962, a list of pastors who graduated from the Augustana Synod Seminary (copy enclosed). I did not see Waterloo IA among the places he'd served, but I did see that he had served in nearby Cedar Rapids 1904-1910. I went to the records of St. Mark's Lutheran church in Cedar Rapids, and found that they were indeed married in Cedar Rapids IA. It also says that Emma Carlson was 26 years old at the time. By our calculations using her age at the time of marriage and at the time of emigration in 1907, she would have been born in 1883 instead of 1882. For example, if Emma was 26 years old in September of 1910 and wasn't born until December, she would still have her 27th birthday later in the year. While I was in the St. Mark's microfilm I looked for them in the membership boo but they were not there.

Remembering that the search far the Celanders involved Waterloo too, I took a chance and I looked for them in the Cedar Rapids church, but did not find them either.

We were unable to verify Emma's identity in Emihamn before the above departure in 1907. I also searched the Hallands Ian emigrant index for Emma Carlssons, Carlsdotters, Karlssons, -dotters, etc. who were born in 1883, but was unable to find her. I had also looked previously for her under the birth year of 1882, without success:.Because that index stops at 1900, I went then to lists of emigrants from parishes In Hallands Ian, and looked for her leavIng Ostra Karup parish ( our only lead) every year from 1901-1906, but did not find her. If we were to look through the exits of every parish in Hallands Ian for 1901-1906, it would take us more time than we have. We are assuming that she left from a parish in Hallands Ian, when bOstra Karup is so close to the I border of Kristianstads Ian. She could easily have moved to another parish to seek work, as people often did. From here, it appears that the easiest thing for you to do would be to follow up on the lead that Emma migh! be born in Ostra Karup parish and look for her in their chronological birth records. We do not have the records to do that for you. By the way, in order to find living relatives in Sweden, one must first use the Swedish parish records to find the ancestors who stayed in Sweden and trace their descendants as far forward as the records go (usually ca. 1920). Once you have done that, you write to the parish itself to see what happened in later records (feel free to write in English). Because of limited staffing, it can take many months to hear back from a parish. It is courteous to enclose 2 international postal reply coupons, purchased from most any local US Post Office. In some cases, parishes have sent their later records to provincial archives. for microfilming, so they may refer you to them instead. We have spent just over 4 hours on your request and would appreciate payment for $40 more for our time (see invoice).

I hope that this information can be helpful to you. Enclosed is a current research request form for ~ future reference. Sincerely, Jill Seaholm .&. Genealogy -http:/ /www .augustana.edu/administration/swenson/
