Facts and Events
1848-49 - Emma came to Australia with her father and siblings on board "Packenham". 1919 - Obituary in The Narracoorte Herald on 1 April: Obituary.— The "Register" states that Mrs. Emma Reynolds Martin, widow of the late Mr. J. N. Martin, who was for many years traffic superintendent of the South-Eastern railways, died at the residence of her son-in-law (Capt. G. T. Rose, Williamstown, Victoria) on Thursday, March 20, at the age of 88 years. She was the youngest daughter of the late Mr. William Hill James, one of the first assayers to the Burra Burra Copper Mining Company, who was afterwards assayer to the Adelaide Mint in 1852, when the historical Adelaide sovereigns were minted by the State Government. Mrs. Martin arrived in South Australia with her father in 1848, and her recollections of the earlier days of the State were full of interest to the younger generations. We may add that Mrs. Martin resided at Kingston for a number of years while her husband was Traffic Superintendent. At first there was only one railway in the South-East — the one from Narracoorte to Kingston — and Mr. Martin was the first superintendent. This line was extended to Custon from Narracoorte, and there was a railway between Mount Gambier and Beachport, and Mr. Martin had the extension as well as the Beachport line under his charge. |
