Mrs. Emma Lanphere, who had been an invalid many years, died in her home in Milton Sunday afternoon, Dec. 20, following an acute illness of less than a month.
Mary Emma, daughter of Chas. Lee and Jane Guthrie Brown, was born May 30, 1851, in Independence, N. Y. During her girlhood, the Browns brought their family of three daughters and a son to Edgerton where Mr. Brown operated a livery. Emma attended Albion academy and Milton College.
On Jan. 13, 1869, she married Albertus Billings Lanphere of Albion. They resided at that place a few years before moving to Hammond, La., their home for 38 years, where Mr. Lanphere met accidental death in April, 1910.
In 1924, Mrs. Lanphere purchased the house in Milton which had since been her home and to which her daughter, Mrs. Louis A. Babcock, and husband later moved to take care of her. She was confined to her bed much of the time but was always cheerful and appreciative. While in good health she was active in church work and attended the meetings of the King's Daughters and the W.C.T.U.
Surviving are two daughters: Mrs. Edward Lee, Indianapolis, Ind., and Mrs. Babcock; also seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, three nieces and a nephew. Her sisters, Mrs. Helen Burdick and Mrs. L. D. Harvey, and brother, Lou Brown, preceded her in death.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Milton S. D. B. church, the Rev. Carroll L. Hill officiating. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery, Albion, with M. J. Babcock and G. L. Waters of Albion, J. H. Coon, Dr. G. E. Crosley, Prof. D. N. Inglis and Ross C. Coon acting as pallbearers.
Among the out of town relatives and friends attending were Mrs. Edward Lee of Indianapolis, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Blackbourn of Elgin, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. L. E. Babcock and three sons of Rockford, Mrs. M. J. Babcock and Mrs. G. L. Walters of Albion.
