    Arthur P. Bagby arrived in Monroe County in 1819 with his possessions tied in a pocket handkerchief. He was born 1794 in Louisa County, Virginia and died 21 September 1858 in Mobile. He was a member of an old and aristocratic family in Virginia. He finished reading law and began to practice in 1819. Elected to the legislature of Alabama in 1821, reelected in 1822, chosen speaker of the House, being the youngest man who ever occupied that position in the state. Member of the House in 1824, member of Senate in 1825, House in 1834, '35, and '36, speaker of House In 1836. Elected Governor of Alabama in 1837 and 1839. Elected to U. S. Senate in 1841. His first wife was Emily N. Steele of Georgia.
