He is listed as "uncle", and he may have been related to Matthew, since Emanuel's sister Sarah married a Henry H Little. However, it appears (from the 1870 and 1880 censuses) that Henry and Sarah were not Matthew's parents, so Emanuel was not as close a relative as an uncle.
