Elsie was born in 1897, the youngest child of Lambert Sale-Buttery and Caroline Price. Her early life was spent in the Old Market district of Bristol, where her parents ran a picture framing shop at West Street. On August 6th, 1923, she married Clifford William Edward Knowland, at St. Luke's Church, Bedminster, Bristol. Shortly afterwards they moved to Forest Walk, Fishponds, where they had their only child, Mary Caroline Knowland, on October 11th, 1924. Physically, Elsie was short - about 4'11" - and thin in appearance. Her health began failing in the 1940's and she passed away from cancer in 1946. She is buried in the St. George area of Bristol.
